The Story Behind
Muzium Tekstil Negara

The National Textile Museum celebrates one of Malaysia’s most enduring forms of cultural expression: textiles. Housed within a historic building once associated with trade and administration, the museum reflects the long relationship between fabric, craft and social life in the Malay world.

For centuries, textiles have carried meaning beyond function. Songket, batik, tenun and embroidery recorded status, belief, ritual and regional identity. Patterns spoke of ancestry, colours conveyed symbolism and techniques were passed down through generations of makers.

Today, Muzium Tekstil Negara preserves and presents this living heritage. Through curated exhibitions and educational programmes, it explores the artistry, innovation and cultural narratives woven into Malaysian textiles. Positioned within the BSAS cultural precinct, the museum connects historical craft with contemporary appreciation — ensuring that these threads of identity continue to be understood, valued and carried forward.
