Bangunan Pejabat Pos Besar Lama

A Place of Connection and Exchange

History

The Story Behind
Bangunan Pejabat Pos Besar Lama

For generations, the Former General Post Office was one of Kuala Lumpur’s most familiar public buildings. Long before instant communication, it was where letters, parcels, government notices, and news passed through daily hands. It connected families, supported businesses, and carried information across towns, states, and seas.

The building was not only a centre of correspondence, but a place of everyday encounter. People queued, waited, exchanged words, and marked moments of ordinary life. Clerks sorted mail, messengers moved in and out, and communications that shaped both personal and public affairs flowed through its counters and rooms. In these routines, the post office quietly became part of the city’s social fabric.

As technology transformed the way people communicate, the original function of the building gradually faded. Yet its civic spirit endured. Designed as a public-facing institution, it remained a place defined by access, movement, and exchange.

Today, following restoration and adaptive reuse, Former General Post Office Building enters a new chapter within the BSAS complex. Reimagined as a cultural and public space, it now supports exhibitions, creative programmes, and shared activities that once again bring people together. From carrying letters and official records to hosting stories, ideas, and encounters, the building continues its long tradition of connection, linking the past of Kuala Lumpur with the life of the city today.
